Databases

Researching journal articals, electronic full texts etc.

With the DBIS (database information system) the university library is offering you a huge amount of interdisciplinary databases.

Databases like  SpringerLink can help you to find quotable contents (e.g. journal articals).

Inside the campus network you have free access to all databases (marked green and yellow). Log in with the external access via VPN before doing your research, if you want to work at home.

Notes on DBIS

How do I find the right database for my research?

You can find all licenced (H) and freely available (F,D) databases made available to you by the university’s library in the DBIS database information system. Since there is a huge number of databases, the Subject Overview in the DBIS can help you to make the right choice.

The TOP databases are always placed at the front – our database recommendations for you.

Underneath, you can then see a list of the entire range of databases.

Which information can I find in the DBIS?

Search function

The search function in the DBIS trawls through the detailed information pertaining to the contents of all databases. Please note: DBIS is to be used in german language only.

Examples:

Search for “Biologie”: you will find the databases which – according to the information in the detailed view in the DBIS – list references about this subject.

Search for “Volltextdatenbank”: all databases that fulfill this requirement under database type are listed.

Contents of the database

What is evaluated in the database? For which subjects can I find literature references? Do I receive reference tips or even full texts to download?

The detailed view provides you important information about the contents of the database BEFORE you start your research.

Licence information

Information about the licence and access options, is important since not all databases are “green”.

If you are not in the campus network, we recommend to log in with the VPN external access before starting your research.

Databases which aren´t accessible with the university library are NOT available in DBIS.

Help

You can also find help for correctly using a database into the DBIS or the respective database itself e.g. with short video clips.

Or simply take a look on YouTube…

Please feel free to contact us – we offer regular database training courses.

Why are databases so important for your research?

Databases help you to find citable content (e.g. journal articles). They search through the content of large quantities of books, journals and electronic full texts and, with just a couple of clicks, you can filter the results according to your topics. Your literature search becomes more effective with the help of databases!

The database information system (DBIS) helps you to find the right database for your literature search. Please Note: The databases are available with different access options (licences).

If you are not in the campus network:

Before starting your research, log in to the external access via VPN.

Open a database from your subject area and search for your topic. You will find references from various sources which subsequently should be researched in the library catalogues (e.g. GVK). This method helps you to discover which library holds the literature and/or whether it is available electronically.
