Doctoral forum on 22 November 2023
Our forum for doctoral candidates and those interested in doing a doctorate on 22 November attracted a great deal of interest. The aim was to provide information on the current status of doctoral programmes and doctoral opportunities at our university. Sven Giermann and Elisa Hofert, both also BMBF-funded employees in the ProfQua NB programme, provided insights into their dissertation projects.
Dr Olaf Strauß introduced himself as the new coordinator of the ProfQua NB project and contact person of the Research Department for all doctoral candidates. In his role, he would like to act as an intermediary between the doctoral students and the Research Department. He describes the development of a co-operation and networking platform for doctoral students in Neubrandenburg as a current focus of his work. Dr Strauß, as a long-standing transfer employee of our university, considers it his concern to link doctorates with the topic of transfer into practice or possible business models wherever possible and offers support here on the basis of his network.
Prof Dr Leif-Alexander Garbe, Vice-Rector for Research, Transfer and International Relations, reported on the opportunities for completing a doctorate at our university and current research funding projects. In particular, the status of efforts to establish the right to award doctorates at our university was met with interest by those interested in a doctorate. Cornelia Andree, Head of the Equal Opportunities Office, concluded by presenting funding opportunities specifically for women in research. In particular, Cornelia referred to the female professors programme, which aims to promote the presence of women in science and establish it in the long term.
Second doctoral colloquium at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences
On 8 December 2021, current doctoral candidates and interested parties from Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences met for the 2nd Doctoral Colloquium. Due to the current coronavirus regulations, the event was held online. In addition to extensive keynote speeches on the university's support for doctoral students, they were also able to present their current research in keynote speeches or during the poster session. The colloquium was accompanied by music, including guitar and singing, and there was a consensus to organise this again next year. For this purpose, it was conditionally agreed to organise the 3rd doctoral colloquium on 6 December 2022. Further information will be announced in due course.
Doctoral colloquium at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences
On 19 September 2018, the first doctoral colloquium of the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences took place, at which our doctoral students presented their doctoral theses to the university public. Matthias Koch and Daniela Kuptz - also doctoral students at our university - led the programme. The Rector of the university, Prof Gerd Teschke, began by providing basic information on the topic of cooperative doctorates, the support offered by the Research Department and other funding opportunities in the form of scholarships. Dr Jenny Linek and Cornelia Andree then presented the services available to doctoral students via the Equal Opportunities Office. Daniela Kuptz presented the "KarriereWegeMentoring " programme of the Universities of Rostock and Greifswald. Jennifer Löbel reported on her experiences as a recipient of funding from the Women Professors Programme II, while doctoral students Omar Taki Den, Jin Zhang from the Department of Food Technology and Sara Ramminger from the Department of Dietetics gave keynote speeches on their work, thus initiating the joint exchange. In order to provide a brief insight into the variety of topics covered in their doctoral theses, the participants presented their posters in dialogue with the professors and prospective scientists.
The successful event was initiated by the Vice-Rector for Research, Knowledge Transfer and International Relations, Professor Leif-Alexander Garbe, who would like to establish the doctoral colloquium as an annual event. Rector Gerd Teschke welcomes the Research Training Group's initiative and sees it as an opportunity to give this group of budding scientists a voice. The aim is both to strengthen the importance of research within Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences and to further develop scientific exchange with other universities and research institutions. In accordance with the self-image of Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences, particular attention is paid to the transfer of knowledge into application. Following the event, a brochure will be published in which all doctoral theses will be described in more detail.
With the research workshop of the Equal Opportunities Office, a network for doctoral students has been established since 2013, offering regular workshops in the field of science. This format is also intended to promote networking among early career researchers - across departments. The group is open to anyone interested in planning or carrying out research work, including Master's students with research intentions. Here you can take a brief look back at previous events.
Where can I find out about funding programmes for my research project? What formalities do I need to observe for research proposals? What makes a good project title? And how can I visualise my results in a meaningful way? These and other important questions about research and project proposals were addressed at the research workshop for doctoral students on 28 February 2019 under the motto "Writing proposals". The Equal Opportunities Office at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences organised this event under the leadership of Dr Jenny Linek. Dr Christina Janson, Dr Olaf Strauß and the Vice-Rector for Research, Prof Dr Leif-Alexander Garbe, were represented from the Research Department. They presented detailed information on funding programmes and contact persons, gave important tips and suggestions on the specific writing process and were able to report on their many years of experience with research proposals. There were many interested questions from the participants.
The second research workshop in 2019 included coaching on the topic of group dynamics and was aimed at doctoral students, students interested in doing a doctorate and lecturers at the university.
Whether united in a seminar, in a tutorial or when realising a project, groups always develop their own dynamics. Supporting students in this process is a complex and reflection-intensive challenge for teachers and students. Starting with an overview of basic group processes, the 13 participants discussed how to deal with different situations and personalities in a didactically meaningful way. They also analysed their role as teachers.
Experienced trainer Dr Anja Centeno García provided the group with playful guidance and suggestions for the design and support of group processes and for their own leadership behaviour.
