Doctoral studies at HAWs - Doctoral colloquium 2024
Around 30 doctoral candidates and those interested in doing a doctorate accepted the invitation from the new doctoral candidate speaker duo at Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences to the 2024 Doctoral Colloquium. Brit Weier and Katrin Oldenburg took the opportunity to present themselves and their projects to the group of doctoral candidates.
The motto of this year's event was "Pathways to a doctorate at UASs". The background to this was that in the run-up to the colloquium, numerous students and staff at our university who were interested in doing a doctorate expressed a desire for more information about this career step. It is well known that the path to a doctorate at UASs differs from that at universities, so that there are often uncertainties and questions in this regard among those interested in a doctorate.
Special thanks go to Sabrina Scharf, a doctoral student in the AL department, and Jann Vogel, a doctoral student in the GPM department, who presented their personal paths to a doctorate. While Sabrina vividly described her career along a timeline, Jann discussed the challenges ("pitfalls") of a doctorate at a UAS and gave valuable tips on how to avoid these stumbling blocks. Dr Olaf Strauß, coordinator of the "ProfQuaNB" project, once again described in detail the process and the individual steps that have to be completed for a cooperative doctorate at the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. Prof. Leif-Alexander Garbe, who as Vice-Rector for Research, Knowledge Transfer and International Relations has a special connection to the topic of doctoral studies, took the time to answer the numerous questions and contributions to the discussion. The topic of efforts to introduce the right to award doctorates in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was met with particular interest. We look forward to welcoming the numerous interested parties to the group of doctoral students at our university soon.

Strong performance at the New Year's colloquium
Strong performance at the New Year's Colloquium for our four doctoral students. This year's New Year's Colloquium 2024 was all about academic qualification. The Vice-Rector for Research, Knowledge Transfer and International Relations, Prof Dr Leif-Alexander Garbe, explained his ideas and activities for a future right to award doctorates at HAW in our federal state. Conclusion: This is a long way off and there is still a lot of convincing to do. The four ProfQuaNB project staff made a convincing contribution to this by presenting their qualification projects on the path to a HAW professorship to the university staff and the invited guests.
The childcare agreement is here!
Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences has drawn up an agreement to improve the framework conditions for supervisors and doctoral candidates, which can be used with immediate effect. Once completed, signed and submitted to the Vice-Rector's Office, it enables doctoral candidates to access funding for early career researchers. The appendix with the work and milestone plan is not obligatory, but is recommended.
The supervision agreement is legally binding and strengthens the rights of doctoral candidates, e.g. in terms of access to working materials, supervision and good scientific practice.
The agreement and the accompanying letter are available as a form in the portal under point 6 "Research and early career researchers" and here.
