According to § 10 BAföG, the student must not have reached the age of 45 at the start of the training programme. However, there are some exceptions: If there is a basic entitlement to BAföG, the level of need is first determined. This requirement is defined in the BAföG. The amount of BAföG rates depends on whether you live with your parents, whether there are surcharges for health and long-term care insurance, i.e. whether you are self-insured, and on your rental costs.

BAföG is generally awarded to students half as a free grant and half as an interest-free loan. The loan portion is repaid in monthly instalments five years after graduation. The amount to be repaid is limited to a maximum of 10,010 euros.
