Mission statement of the university

The university prepares students through comprehensive academic education for professional activities that require the application of scientific knowledge and methods. It sees itself as an application-orientated university that attaches great importance to research as well as teaching. It is the university's own research that enables a scientifically sound and at the same time practice-orientated education. Teaching and research form an indissoluble unit for the university, which is orientated towards problems in the world of work with the aim of the science-based further development of professional practice, including through appropriate qualification.

In addition to the application-oriented link between teaching and research, transdisciplinarity is another guiding principle in the university's self-image. The university sees itself as a multidisciplinary campus university that unites various engineering, social and health science disciplines in a manageable communication space, thus enabling questions and problem solutions that broaden the horizons of individual disciplines.

The university is committed to the region. It sees itself as a hinge between regional and international specialist communities. It is open to the particular issues and problems of the region and aims to act as an academic centre and driving force in teaching, research and continuing education in the region. The regional focus is also reflected in the specialised and thematic orientation of studies and teaching as well as research and continuing education.

Research, teaching and continuing education are centred on the following key areas of work and areas of expertise:

Agriculture and food science
Expertise in the entire chain of production and processing of food and renewable raw materials as well as the associated ecological, social, health and economic issues and the development of rural areas.

Health, prevention, care and health management
Prevention and health promotion, public health, health systems research, care, rehabilitation, care management, health management, care management.

Landscape Sciences and Geomatics
Environmental, regional and urban planning under anthropogenic and ecological conditions as well as the sustainable development and design of rural areas and regions, including historical gardens. Recording and processing of spatial and object-related data with a focus on the application area of geoinformation and engineering, natural and environmental sciences.

Social work, education and training
Research and teaching for the practical fields of education and training outside of the classroom, socio-educational counselling and intervention as well as the management of social institutions.

Sustainable structural change and reorganisation of rural regions Concepts and strategies for the development of rural regions in accordance with the planning, social and infrastructural challenges of demographic change and the economic framework conditions. The programme is characterised by multidisciplinary work and research, with all of the university's departments approaching the subject of research from their respective specialist perspectives and using their specific methods. The main focus is on conceptual and strategic aspects of the region's development opportunities.

Consecutive Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes are an essential part of the university's profile. In addition to the attractive Bachelor's degree programmes, offering highly competitive Master's degree programmes is a central aspect of the university's development.

Internationalisation is a central element of academic education for science and practice. Social diversity in a globalised world demands intercultural sensitivity and the ability to work in internationally influenced knowledge contexts and working environments. In addition to its regional orientation, Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences attaches particular importance to the further development of international relations. Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences strives to further increase its attractiveness for foreign students and at the same time wants to increase the proportion of its students who study abroad for one or more semesters.

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to the necessary discussion on the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which describes the right to equal opportunities and the development of self-esteem of every person as well as the strengthening of human diversity at all levels of the education system and during lifelong learning. The inclusion of higher education is a central element of an inclusive education system from the perspective of the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences.

The promotion of academic excellence in application-oriented teaching and research is an important concern of Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences, which it promotes through quality assurance, evaluation and accreditation of its programmes.

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences promotes gender equality at the university and implements gender mainstreaming in its planning and decision-making processes. As a "family-friendly university", Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences actively supports the compatibility of family and career as well as family and studies for all members by creating family-friendly working and study conditions and developing a social environment in which studying, working and researching with a family is possible.
In order to meet the needs of individual educational biographies and the increasing diversity of students and to promote the academic success of all students, a needs-based, high-quality and sustainable counselling and support service is provided.

Following successful certification in the environmental audit in accordance with the European Union's Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) in 2014, the tasks of environmental management will be transferred to Department III, where they will be integrated and continuously processed in cooperation with a steering group. Environmental reporting will be carried out by the central controlling department. The aim is to continuously improve the environmental performance of Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences as a self-evident cross-sectional task of all structural units. The milestones will be the re-certifications, the next of which will take place in 2018.

Declaration for democracy, diversity and tolerance

The University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg is a place for study, teaching, research, further education and transfer. In the institution of higher education, people of different ethnic and social origin, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, religion and ideology can realise their right to individual development and education in accordance with applicable human rights, democratic norms and laws. Accordingly, universities contribute regionally, nationally and internationally to a democratic culture of coexistence.

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences is committed to democracy, diversity and tolerance. It combines this with its declaration to observe the following in studies, teaching, research, continuing education and transfer:

1. any form of racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism, inhuman and anti-constitutional behaviour will not be tolerated. The display of such signs and symbols - for example through clothing or the affixing of such stickers, graffiti or lettering on objects or buildings on the university campus - is also not tolerated. In student and final theses, it is the responsibility of the authors to ensure that no racist, discriminatory, anti-Semitic, inhuman or anti-constitutional ideas and no such content and attitudes are (re)produced or propagated. A critical academic examination of racist, discriminatory, anti-Semitic, inhuman and anti-constitutional issues is always possible and desirable. The academic supervision of student and qualifying theses is carried out by the teaching staff to the best of their knowledge and belief.

2. at least every two years, educational programmes on the topics of democracy, diversity and tolerance are created and/or made available to university members, administrative and academic staff as well as students on current regional developments and their own options for action. This is done in cooperation with suitable education providers as part of StudiumPlus, continuing education programmes and other university didactic formats.

3. in suitable forms of publicity, e.g. in the university's own publications and on its homepages, Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences makes it clear both externally and internally that it
- does not tolerate racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism, inhuman and unconstitutional behaviour
- opposes the display of racist, discriminatory, anti-Semitic, inhuman and unconstitutional behaviour, discriminatory, anti-Semitic, inhuman and anti-constitutional symbols
- immediately removes such stickers, graffiti and lettering on objects and buildings on the university campus
- takes action against racist, anti-Semitic, inhuman and anti-constitutional behaviour, insults, discrimination or attacks against its members, relatives and guests.

4. the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences sees itself as a university in the region and actively supports local and regional civil society initiatives and actions against racism, discrimination, anti-Semitism and inhuman and unconstitutional behaviour.

5. the University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg provides information on the framework and measures it uses to work towards the concrete realisation of the intentions declared here. The Anti-Discrimination Council and the Ethics Committee are suitable bodies that support the decision-making process with regard to measures.
