As part of the doctoral procedure, the doctoral candidate demonstrates their ability to carry out independent academic work.
In principle, the doctoral degree is awarded by a university or an equivalent institution of higher education. These universities therefore have the right to award doctorates. Universities of applied sciences offer the option of a cooperative doctorate, which means that professors from universities of applied sciences may participate in the doctoral process as supervisors, reviewers and examiners.
The conditions and requirements of the doctorate are regulated by the respective doctoral regulations of the universities or individual faculties. The doctoral candidate enrols as a doctoral student in accordance with the requirements of the respective university. This includes the respective semester fee and, in return, the semester ticket and student ID card. FH graduates may be subject to special admission requirements, such as a better average grade or the completion of a viva voce.
If all examinations have been passed, the university or the faculty authorised by the university to award doctorates will award the academic degree of "Doktor" - supplemented by the respective subject area, e.g. Dr. rer. nat.
