Ready for a doctorate?
A doctorate is a qualification phase in which you establish yourself as an independent researcher and acquire the necessary skills that will enable you to pursue an academic career. It opens up many opportunities for you, but also harbours many challenges. Weighing up the pros and cons and reflecting intensively on your own goals and personal motivation are essential prerequisites. A successful doctorate requires perseverance, discipline and energy.
Before you decide to do a doctorate, you should ask yourself these questions:
- Do I enjoy working academically?
- Do I want to work in a responsible research or management position later on?
- Am I prepared to concentrate on a specific topic for at least three years?
- Does a doctorate fit into my life plans for the coming years (family, place of residence, career, finances, etc.)?
- Can I structure myself and work out a realistic work plan for the entire duration of the doctorate?
- Can I motivate myself to continue the project even in difficult phases?
- Can I work both independently and in a team?
- Can I translate my theses, ideas, solutions and results into scientific texts?
